What is the Thyroid?

Your thyroid gland is a small gland shaped like a butterfly and located at the base of your neck, in between your Adam’s apple and your collarbone. The “wings” spread around each side of your windpipe. It’s a very small part of your body, but it plays an important role in keeping you healthy and happy.

Your thyroid is an important part of your body’s endocrine system, which includes your adrenal glands, pituitary gland, kidneys, and hypothalamus, among others. Each of these parts of the endocrine system has a special job, and your Thyroid is no different.

Your thyroid’s job is to release hormones into your blood, which affects many different parts of your body. It has a big impact on your metabolism, which is how quickly your body burns the fuel that you get from your food. If your thyroid is underactive – a condition called hypothyroidism – then your body slows down.  If it’s overactive – hyperthyroidism – it speeds up.

What are the Symptoms of Thyroid Problems?

When your thyroid is out of balance, it can cause all sorts of thyroid disorder symptoms.

Diseases like Wilson’s Temperature SyndromeHashimoto’s Thyroiditis, Graves’ disease, hyperthyroidism, hypothyroidism, and more thyroid gland problems can easily ruin your day.

They can cause you to experience thyroid disease symptoms like fatigue, insomnia, sensitivity to cold, cold hands and feet, dry skin, constipation, hair loss, menstrual irregularities, and weight gain. Although they may cause the blood work for your thyroid to look better, the medications that medical doctors most commonly prescribe for hypothyroidism often don’t help much with these symptoms. And because these symptoms are common to many other ailments, thyroid issues are often misdiagnosed.

How Do You Get Thyroid Problems?

Your thyroid is a sensitive organ, so there are many different causes of thyroid problems.

  • Graves’ disease is an autoimmune condition where your body’s own immune system ends up disrupting thyroid function and causing it to become overactive.
  • Thyroiditis stems from an inflammation of the thyroid, which ends up leaking thyroid hormones into your bloodstream.
  • Goiter is a condition where the thyroid grows larger than it should, and is often caused by low iodine levels, as well as a thyroid hormone imbalance.
  • Hashimoto’s Thyroiditis is an autoimmune thyroid disease caused by the body attacking the thyroid as though it were a viral invasion.
